Play an active role in your healthcare

All too often, pateients do not play an active role in their own healthcare. They tend to leave the entire process up tho the doctors and their staff. It is important for them to realize, however, that everyone involved is a pivotal member of the health care team.

With your input and feedback you can help your physician to reduce risks related to using medicines and to get the maximum benefit.
LET THEM KNOW - The goal is to assist your physician in tailoring a health plan to you. The more information that your health care team knows about you, the easier it is to achieve that goal. Be sure to let your healthcare provider know of:
  • your complete medical history
  • any allergies and medicine sensitivities
  • prescription and over-the-counter medications you take either occasionally or routinely
  • Many dietary supplements you use, including vitamins and herbal supplements
  • anything that may affect your ability to use the medication

ASK QUESTIONS - It is imperative that you fully understand everything that your health care team is doing and why. Never hesitate to ask questions about diagnosis and treatment, as your clear understanding is essential to recovery. Use this guide to gather the information you need to know from yoour health care team, and to ensure that you ask the right follow-up questions.

  • What are the brand names of the prescribed medicines and are there generic forms available?
  • What is the medicine for and what is the expected result of its use?
  • What should be done if side effects occur?
  • When should a difference or improvement be noticed?
  • Should any medicines, dietary supplements, drinks, foods or activites be avoided while using this drug?
  • How should the medicine be stored?
  • Are there any other options available, and where can information on those be found?
